Welcome to Ms. Magendanz's Room 316

Shatekon Kindergarten students painted winter scenes using ‘Puffy Paints’ (glue mixed with shaving cream).

National Fire Prevention Week

To mark National Fire Prevention Week in October, members of the Vischer Ferry Volunteer Fire Departments visited each class at Shatekon. Students in Ms. Magendanz's kindergarten class were introduced to a firefighter and were taught not to play with matches, stop drop and roll if clothing is on fire, and how to call 911 in an emergency.

Yummy Apples!

We have been busy reading and learning all about apples. We had an apple taste test to discover our favorite flavors. Then, we graphed the results. Yellow (Golden Delicious) apples were the crowd favorites.

Our Weekly Schedule:

 Library

Wednesday is our library day. Books may be returned to school any time after the book(s) has/have been read. In order for a new book to be checked out, the previous book(s) must be returned. It’s a great idea to keep your child’s library book in a safe place all the time so you don’t have to worry about lost or damaged books. If your child finishes their book(s) before library day, he/she may return the book(s) to school and get new ones at the library during open book exchange.

Physical Education

Thursdays are our Physical Education (P.E.) days in the gymnasium with Coach Thompson. Please send your child into school wearing sneakers and comfortable pants/shorts on every Thursday. Thank you so much for your help.

Computer Lab

Every other Friday (starting on 9/16) with Mrs. Rao.

The first week of school is always exciting. I know this week has been greatly anticipated. I hope this will answer some beginning of the year questions.

Your child has a very important "Take Home Folder". There will be a "Go Home" side, and a "To School" side of the folder. I will send important notices and notes home to you in this folder on the "Go Home" side. Please check your child’s folder each night. At times, there may be forms that need to be completed. Please place the completed forms back in the "Take Home Folder" and have your child return it to school the next morning.

Absences:

Whenever your child is absent the district requires that an "excuse note" be sent in the next day. You can also e-mail me an excuse (reason for your child’s absence from school) and I will forward it to the office for your child’s records.

Snack:

We will have a quick snack break around 9am and 1pm. Please send in a small nutritious snack for your child each day. Please do not send in candy or soda. *We have nut allergies in our classroom. Please do not send in a snack or birthday treat that contains nuts.* Thank you!

Birthday Treats:

Feel free to send in nut-free birthday treats to celebrate your child’s big day! Please do not send in cakes. Please do not send in a treat that contains nuts. As of now, we have about 25 students in our AM class and 20 in our PM class. We will celebrate during our snack time. Summer birthdays will be celebrated towards the end of our school year.

Notes:

Please send in a note any time your child is to be picked up, is not riding his/her usual bus, or is not getting off at his/her usual bus stop. If we do not receive a signed note, your child will have to go home on his/her regular bus and get off at their usual bus stop.

Volunteers:

At Open House night, I will have a sign-up sheet for parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in our classroom, please sign-up Monday, September 19th at Open House or drop me a note and I’ll pencil you in. There will be additional times throughout the year that parent volunteers will be very helpful, too. I will be sure to provide updates as other times come up.

Book Clubs:

Periodically I will send home book orders. Often they offer good deals on interesting books. Please do not feel obligated to order. *Checks should be made out to each individual club. (i.e. Scholastic Book Club) Please do not send in cash for book orders.

Class List:

I plan to send home a list of the children in our class, together with phone numbers and addresses. Please let me know by Monday, October 3rd if you do not want to be included on this list. The reason for sending home this list is so that birthday invitations and play dates can be arranged outside of school. Please do not send party invitations to school. They are easily lost and very distracting. Thank you for your understanding.

Homework Packets:

We will start homework packets in October. Each Monday, your child will receive a homework packet. This packet is due by Friday. Please help your child plan ahead for the best way to complete the homework. Some children work best by doing a little bit each night. The children can return completed homework any time during the week, but all packets should be returned by Friday.

Lastly, I hope you found this preliminary letter informative and helpful. Whenever you have a question, please feel free to drop me a note in your child’s Take Home Folder or e-mail me at magejuli@shenet.org. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year. We will learn and grow together.

Sincerely,

Julia Magendanz
