“Ready Set Grow…A Complete Guider for Parents of
Children Entering Kindergarten.”
Here’s what
you can expect in the coming months after registering a child
for kindergarten
-
Every
elementary school has an orientation program for
kindergarten students throughout the spring. You will be
notified prior to orientation.
-
In the middle
of August you will receive a notice telling you the name of
your child’s teacher and the room number.
-
Students in
grades 1-12 usually start school on the Wednesday after
Labor Day. The regular schedule for kindergarten students
does not start until the following Monday. Teachers will
schedule an appointment with you and your child during those
first three days prior to the start of the regular
schedule. This is an opportunity for teachers to learn
about their students and to get a sense of the make up of
their classrooms.
-
Prior to the
start of school, each building / teacher will provide
information on snacks, school supplies, bus safety,
volunteering, PTA, etc.
-
In August the
district mails a calendar with important information about
busing and key events district-wide. If you do not receive
one prior to the start of school, please call the district
office.
Kindergarten
Session Assignment
Assignments to
morning or afternoon session for kindergarten is ultimately
dependent on the number of sections in each school and the
balancing of enrollments across those sections. Shenendehowa
is a mobile community and our population changes quite a bit
from year to year, so assignments and bus routes do sometimes
change.
Bus routes are
designed to achieve the lowest average ride time for all
students thereby minimizing the time each student spends on
the bus going to and from school.
It is our
intent to treat each student and family as equitable as
possible by applying the same standard to all students. It is
unfair to make exceptions for some but not for others.
Therefore, Shenendehowa does not make any exceptions to
kindergarten session assignments.
Kindergarten
Transportation
-
At the end of
August a bus stop notice is mailed to the parents of each
student listing the bus number, the approximate time of the
pick-up / drop-off and the bus stop location.
-
At noontime
pick up and drop off bus stops for kindergarteners are often
right in front of their homes unless there are several
students within a short distance. In that case, we
typically assign one centralized stop.
-
Students will
have an opportunity to ride a bus when they visit their
school for the orientation program.
-
Every bus is
identified by both a number and a symbol. Kindergarten
students are taught to identify their bus by the symbol.
