SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS
Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held in the library located at Gowana Middle School at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Other meetings of the board are scheduled as needed during the year. All meetings are open to the public.

Order of Business

Meetings of the Board of Education follow a prepared agenda. Copies of the agenda are available to the public at each meeting and are posted at the district office on the Friday prior to the meeting.

Shenendehowa's board conducts two types of meetings, business and study sessions. During a business session, the board officially votes on particular items on the agenda. During a study session, the board receives information however no action is taken.

The board also meets in executive session to discuss personnel matters, labor negotiations and other items that are confidential as defined by the Open Meeting Law of the State of New York. Executive sessions are closed to the public; however, any formal action on the passage of any resolution must be taken in open public session.

Public participation

Persons wishing to address the Board of Education can do so during the "public comment" section at the beginning of the agenda. Speakers are requested to state their name and address and identify the organization, if any, they represent. The president may suggest that speakers confine their remarks to a certain period of time in order to provide an opportunity for others to speak.

Public comment provides a way for residents to address the Board of Education publicly. Residents wishing to "discuss" an issue or receive more information regarding a particular concern should contact a board member or a district administrator directly.

SCHOOL BOARDS

The Board of Education is made up of seven unsalaried citizens elected to serve a three-year term. The board's powers and duties are derived from the New York State Constitution, the laws of New York State and the rulings of the New York State Commissioner of Education. The Board of Education's main areas of responsibility are:

  • Establish district policies.

  • Develop an annual budget for public approval.

  • Vote on the Superintendent's recommendations on personnel matters and contracts.

  • Review courses of study and textbooks.

  • Act as a communication link between residents and the Superintendent.

No person or group of persons acts in the name of the board. All motions require a majority vote before the Board can act. A board member is in an official capacity only during an official Board meeting. The Board employs a Superintendent who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the district and administration of Board policies. The Superintendent develops policies, programs and plans for Board action.
