If a lock can not be purchased, students should inform their teacher of their situation. During class, all personal belongings should be locked securely in a physical education locker. Students should not share lockers or give out their personal combination to other students. Lockers should be secured and locked before, during and after class. The physical education teacher may possess the combination for security and safety purposes. It is required for all students to have a set of physical education clothes and sneakers available in their respective physical education locker. Periodically, students should take their physical education clothes home to be cleaned for hygiene purposes. Dress code for PE students should be clearly stated in the course outline, as well as on the department’s or individual teacher’s website. According to Shenendehowa policy 3410A, students are expected to adhere to the following and additional requirements for specific courses or events. The building principal, or his/her designee, shall be responsible for informing all students and their parents of the student dress code, as follows:
Understanding that the jewelry guidelines are introduced at the elementary schools and consistent between each building and progressing all the way through to the high school, the expectations, responsibilities and accountabilities are greater for the high school since they are earning credit toward graduation. The jewelry guidelines specifically state the following: No jewelry is to be worn during Physical Education classes. (i.e. watches, bracelets, rings, hanging earrings, body piercing).
Curriculum: Students at High School East will have the opportunity to choose 1 of 4 elective tracks for their physical education class. They will repeat the process for the second semester. Students picking different English classes, Literature of the Oppressed, Irish Literature, World Cult./World Lit.) need to be aware of the following things:
click here for Physical Education Tracks Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Adapted Physical Education is a specially designed program of developmental activities, games, sports and rhythms suited to the interests, capabilities and limitations of students with disabilities who may not safely or successfully engage in unrestricted participation in the activities of the regular physical education program. The safety of students must be considered when planning and implementing APE programs. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that special education, including instruction in physical education, be provided at no cost to parents.
An APE class is a class that should be scheduled like any other PE class that is given appropriate facilities for conducting a safe and meaningful curriculum. Students who are in APE are either identified through an IEP or with medical documentation. It is the expectation that the PE teacher will meet the need of the individual students in the class by delivering the mandated PE curriculum with necessary modifications. See attached Adapted Physical Education Task Analysis form to assist with grading along with participation guidelines. Life Skills The Life Skills Program is for students who are functioning at various levels and have varying needs. Curriculum should be designed to develop motor skills appropriate for life-long fitness. (i.e., bowling, walking, Frisbee, etc.) Equipment Allocations Adapted PE equipment should be ordered through the PE Department’s budget. Life skills equipment should be ordered through the Special Education Department at the District Office. Classroom Aides In any of these programs, there may be aides that accompany the students. The student’s IEP and individual needs will determine whether or not an aide will accompany them in PE class. Graduation Requirement: (NYS Mandate) Every student in Shenendehowa High School is required to complete two credits in physical education. To accomplish this goal, a student must pass eight semesters earning a half credit per semester. The following is an excerpt from the Part 100.5 New York State Education Department graduation requirements. "...All students shall have earned the equivalent of two units of credit in physical education in accordance with the requirements set forth in section 135.4(c)(2)(ii) of this Title. Such units of credit shall not count towards the required units of credit set forth in paragraphs (1) and (2) of this subdivision for those students who enter grade nine before the 2001-2002 school year. Beginning with the 2001-2002 school year and thereafter, such units of credit in physical education shall count toward the required total. A student who has completed the diploma requirements as set forth in paragraphs (1) and (2) of this subdivision in fewer than eight semesters, and who is otherwise eligible to receive a diploma, shall not be required to continue enrollment in high school for the sole purpose of completing the physical education requirements as set forth in this paragraph." For more information refer to: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/deputy/Documents/alternassess.htm Physical Education classes are held throughout the High School East and West facilities. At High School East, indoor classes are held indoors at the main gymnasium and the new gymnasium. Classes will also utilize the strength and conditioning room as well as the wrestling room. Outside facilities include ten (10) tennis courts, 6 lane 400 meter track, as well as multiple fields to support the physical activity programs. High School West classes use the gymnasium at High School West for their indoor programming. For outdoor facilities, the physical education classes utilize the track, seven tennis courts and multiple fields space. Students may need to be excluded from certain activities throughout the year due to medical needs. The following is the correct process: Student brings doctor's/parent's note to nurse. Nurse will fill out standard district medical note, and the student must bring this to the physical education teacher at the start of class. All documentation should be kept on file. Short-term medicals- exclusion from all activity for less than 5 class periods. The teacher must clearly notify the student as to how they will need to make up missed activities. It is recommended that if possible, the student be actively engaged in the activity as an official, time keeper, equipment manager, etc. Physically making up missed classes, once capable, is another option. Written assignments should be the last possible option. Long-term medicals- exclusion from all activity for more than 5 class periods. The teacher must clearly notify the student as to how they will need to make up missed activity. It is recommended that if possible, the student be actively engaged in the activity as an official, time keeper, equipment manager, etc. Written work may be an option but assignments should tie in with the current unit. In certain instances, students may simply have limitations in regards to what activities they may safely participate in. Each building should have a form that lists all of the activities throughout the year. This list should be filled out and signed by the student's physician and parent/guardian. All documentation should be kept on file. Individual circumstances may warrant creativity in determining an alternate plan. Students that miss physical education class will need to make up the class within two weeks to receive credit or within the prescribed timeline designated by the individual teacher. To make up a class, a student must make up the class with their designated physical education teacher. Students may also make up physical education classes during am/pm intramurals or during a teacher's 6th period. In some instances, teachers may work out their options with another teacher. It must be mutually agreed upon by both teachers. In addition, a student has to be in good standing and he/she must be coming from a free period or study hall. The physical education teacher has the right to approve a student's attendance in class. The teacher must consider class size, safety issues, student behavior and conduct, etc. The following lists the correct procedure for students to take when making up a class. Please be sure they are fully aware of these steps. 1. You must need to make up a PE class (No walk-ins!) The form below represented below is the one the student will obtain from their PE teacher.

Intramurals: Open House occurs in the first two (2) months of
returning to school. Open house is a great opportunity for
parents/guardians to meet the teacher and find out more about their
son/daughter's physical education experience. Each year we are coming up
with a updated ways of presenting information. The session should be fun
and informative. Missed open house in the fall of 2009. Check out
the video we presented below. Don't have time? Take it with you on the
go. Items to include:
