1000 BOOK KIDS CLUB

Check out our 1000 Book Kids Club by checking out a bag of books!  Each bag contains 10 books.  When a pre-K or K student is done reading (or being read to), simply return the bag in exchange for a new one!  Many children have read all 1000 books in this fabulous collection.  Simply sign up and sign out in the Skano Lobby.  Volunteers are needed to help keep the bags organized and full of books!

Skano’s After School Fun program enhances student’s education by offering fun mini-courses not included in their existing curriculum. Classes will meet once a week for five (5) weeks during the winter months. We need lots and lots of volunteers to make this program a success. Always a popular program with the kids!!

This is an annual basketball tournament held in late February in which participating Shen elementary school faculty and staff form basketball teams and cheerleading squads.  The teams play against other Shen elementary teams in a tournament format.  It is an exciting, fun, action packed event that the kids love.  There is an atmosphere of great enthusiasm and school spirit!  The Chairperson will need to attend organizational meetings held approximately twice a month leading up to the date of the event, report at PTA meetings, supervise Skano volunteers both in the organizational phase, as well as the evening of the event.  Volunteers are needed to help prepare for the event, but also to help with admissions, concessions, and other duties as assigned the evening of the event.

Held in our playground, we grill hamburgers and hotdogs, and ask our families to contribute salads, chips, and desserts. The annual Book Fairs are held twice a year-in the fall and spring. They provide students and parents with the opportunity to purchase books at school. The Fall Book Fair is held during the Parent/Teacher conference times. The Spring Book Fair is held during the Ice Cream Social. Volunteers are needed to help the children with their purchases.

Teachers help us collect Campbell's soup labels and General Mills box tops in the classroom all year long.  At the end of the school year, we redeem them to obtain free audio/visual equipment for Skano along with monies to use toward Skano activities.  Start saving those labels and box tops now! 

Volunteers are needed to trim and bundle the labels.  This can even be done from the comfort of your own home!

Price Chopper gives points for purchases with the Advantage card that the school can use to get school supplies.  Hannaford gives School Dollar Certificates that can be redeemed for cash for PTA sponsored programs.  These programs both start in the fall.  The Chairperson is in charge of distributing flyers for both and collecting and submitting the certificates for Hannaford.

CULTURAL ARTS

Cultural Arts introduces children to cultural activities in the Albany area. Programs are designed to enhance children’s education by relating in-school studies with real-life events either by taking the children to performances outside of Skano or by bringing performances to Skano. Volunteers are needed during school hours to supervise and usher the children to and from the performances. Not only do you get to see the children’s excitement as they watch the performances, but you get to watch the performances as well!

Dolphin Readers is a reading program that encourages children to read, independently or with others, for 15 minutes per day for 20 days each month. This program runs from October through March. Students can also participate in a variety of reading-oriented activities--such as celebrating Dr. Suess’ birthday/Read Across America Day, Dolphin Reader Read-ins, Pajama Story Times, Poster Presentations of favorite authors, and other surprises--throughout the year. Parent volunteers are greatly needed to help support these activities throughout the year!

The Family Craft Night is an eventful afternoon out for our Skano families. Craft booths are set up where the children can create their own holiday gifts. It’s an opportunity for the children to explore their creative side while encouraging fun, quality family time. There are food booths and a bake sale also.

PTA EVENT PHOTOGRAPHER

The PTA Photographer would take pictures at PTA events and at events that take place during the school year.  These pictures would be used for the year book.

 

PUBLICITY

For any school event, activity, achievement, or program you would like "publicized," call or email with two weeks advance notice. Skano’s students love to see their pictures and stories in the newspapers. You can submit photos and write-ups after the event. Drop the photo, with the names of the people pictured and a brief description of the "event," into the PTA Publicity mail folder in the school office.

 

REFLECTIONS

The National PTA developed the Reflections Program in 1969 to interest children, parents, teachers and

communities in the arts.  Since then, thousands of students have participated in this program each year and have enjoyed the benefits of having their creative talents recognized and their self esteem developed.Each year a new theme is selected and students are asked to interpret that theme in their work in the art areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts.  A volunteer is needed to promote the Reflections program and gather entries to submit to the Regional PTA which will be judged and if qualified will go onto the National PTA.  Check www.nyspta.org/programs/reflections.cfm for more information.

School pictures are a rewarding experience for everyone. The children love to have their pictures taken and all who help enjoy themselves. Notices are sent home prior to picture day with helpful hints for achieving great photos. On picture day,

we need volunteers to assist children to and from their classes, fix hair, straighten clothes, and make sure student have a great smile

School Supplies are pre-ordered in May and delivered and picked up by parents in August.  This is a service provided by the PTA that parents really appreciate and children love to receive their school supply pack.  Once school supply lists are distributed by teachers, you will need to submit to vendor.  Then distribute order forms to school and tally orders.  In August, you will need to supervise a scheduled pick-up day and time.

SHEN INVENTORS

Attend district Shen Inventors meetings to learn about the program.   Maybe do a six week club leading to the show at the mall.  Meeting once a week after school to brain storm ideas and help kids plan projects. Put posters up regarding the meetings and information with the date and time.  Ask the office to do daily announcements and some kind of mention at Morning Program.  Collect registration slips. Help out the day of the event. Collect student medals and distribute them to the Skano students.  Have a small ceremony to distribute medals. You would be the contact person to answer student and parent questions.
