Adopt-A-Family

Adopt-A-Family helps needy Karigon Family have a nice holiday season by providing food and useful gifts. Adopting an angel means making a donation and receiving a paper angel (displayed in the lobby windows), that goes toward granting wishes by the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Bake Sales

Bake Sales are held at the Monster Mash Bash and Spring Family night. Volunteers are needed to provide baked goods and man the tables for these sales.

Banking Program (First Niagara)

This program promotes saving among our students in 1st through 5th grade. Children are given an opportunity to bank Tuesday morning before classes begin. Volunteers are needed Tuesday morning for approximately 1 hour.

Book Fairs

Book fairs are one week long and are held in October and April. this committee sets up the book fair and needs volunteers to help the children select and purchase books.

Bowling

Bowling parties will take place three times a year: fall, winter and spring. Volunteers are needed to supervise the children at the bowling alley; one volunteer for every two lanes of bowlers

Box Tops for Education

Earn money for Karigon by sending in the "Box Top for Education" symbols from eligible products. Volunteers are needed to clip, count and bundle the "labels". This can be done at home.

Button Machine

This position entails making buttons for kindergarten screening and various activities during the school year.

By-laws Committee

This committee is responsible to update the by-laws as needed.

Campbell's Labels for Education

Free educational and athletic equipment can be earned for Karigon simply by cutting and redeeming proofs of purchase from Campbell's products. Volunteers are needed to cut labels down to the acceptable size. This can be done at home.

Cultural Arts

PTA sponsors a wide variety of arts in education programs to supplement and enhance your children's academic education. Programs have included magicians, storytellers, puppeteers, plays and writers in residence. The PTA Council also provides grade-level programs throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to chair the committee, as well as to help usher and seat the children at the performances.

D.A.R.E. (Substance Abuse Prevention)

This committee promotes substance abuse awareness and education. It sponsors Alcohol and Drug Awareness week and coordinates a graduation program for the Fifth grade students completing the DARE course.

Delegate(s) to Council

Two individuals represent Karigon at the District PTA Council meetings and report back to Karigon district wide PTA news.

Family Activities

The PTA sponsors family nights which include entertainment (DJ's, magicians, movies) and refreshments. It's a fun way to meet other families and get involved with the Karigon experience. Volunteers are needed to help plan, set up, serve refreshments and clean up.

Family Reading Night

This is an evening that involves reading activities for the whole family to enjoy. It is held once a year.

Family Reading - Turn off TV Week

This is a week long event that involves family activities in place of TV watching. It is in conjunction with the National Turn Off Your TV Week.

Family Science Night

This is a family night that encourages families to work together to learn about the wonders of Science.

Fifth Grade Activities

This committee plans activities for the Fifth Grade as they prepare to graduate from Karigon. Activities have included a class picnic, a bake sale to raise money for the class gift, arranging a class picture, and planning graduation ceremony. All Fifth Grade parents welcome to participate!

Fund Raiser

In October, the PTA holds a fund raiser to raise money to support PTA-sponsored activities throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed for sorting and distributing the orders.

Holiday Shoppe

Holiday Shoppe runs for two days in early December. It gives the children the opportunity to buy gifts for their family/friends at relatively low prices. Volunteers are needed to work the day of the sale.

Honorary Life/Recognition

Recognizes individuals with superior dedication and distinguished service to children and youth in any or all of the following areas: home, school, community and place of worship.

Hospitality

This committee provides refreshments at the PTA Welcome Coffees and Open House, and plans a staff Holiday Dessert in December and a staff luncheon in May during teacher appreciation week. Volunteers are needed to bake or donate goods, set up, serve, and clean up.

Kaleidoscope
(After School Program)

Consists of five to six weeks of classes (cooking, crafts, ice-skating, science, magic), offered to students after regular school hours in March and April, and usually run approximately one hour. If you have a special interest you would like to teach please contact us! Volunteers are also needed for registration and aiding/chaperoning classes.

Karigon Improvements

Small improvements (flowers, bushes) are made to the Karigon school grounds, playgrounds and are maintained. Volunteers are needed at special planting times. Also, the lobby windows are decorated with seasonal themes by interested students and teachers.

Karigon Journal

This committee produces the PTA newsletter every month.

Membership

Membership gives parents and teachers a way of supporting our Karigon children through PTA. Becoming a member only involves a small membership fee and does not further obligate the member. Membership dollars are a large portion of the PTA budget that provides your children with so many extras. Please help us make a difference and join now!

McDonald's Night Fundraiser

This committee coordinates a night of fun at work. Parents, teachers and staff get together and work at McDonald's on Rte. 9. Volunteers serve ice cream, count Karigon students at drive-thru window and inside restaurant, serve soda at drive-thru window, and make fries!

Odyssey of the Mind

Compliments your child's experience by allowing them to develop their creative side. Students work as a team to solve open-ended problems they select from several posed annually by the national Odyssey of the Mind Organization. Volunteers are needed to coach the students.

Price Chopper Tools for Schools

Enrollment in the Tools for Schools program at Price Chopper earns points for Karigon that are used to purchase school equipment.

Reflections

Reflections is a program sponsored by the National PTA.  A specific theme is announced each year.  Students may then choose to independently create works (for example:  literature, art, photography) reflecting the theme.  The committee distributes information about the program, collects student submissions, organizes judging, communicates with participants, and plans a reception for the participants and winners. 

Refreshments

Refreshments (such as pizza and soda) are served on Family Nights. Volunteers are needed to help serve at these events.

"Rise in Support of Education"

Parents volunteer their time on a regular basis to help students in the Library or Computer Lab.

Saturday Science Series

Children are grouped by grade (1 and 2 or 3/4/5) and exposed to science via a series of five 90-minute sessions in January and February. Local scientists, engineers, organizations and individuals specializing in presenting science topics to students, come and speak with the groups. Volunteers are needed to contact speakers, make copies, distribute information, and to help assist students during the programs.

Scholarship

Two - Four $750 scholarships are given to graduating Seniors who attended Karigon Elementary School and who are going to college in the fall. Volunteers are needed to distribute applications and to review applicants and select a recipient.

School Portraits

This committee arranges for the children's individual school portraits to be taken in the Fall. Volunteers are needed to assist the photographer's).

School Supplies

This committee gathers school supply information from the teachers in spring. They arrange for the students who desire to pre-order they fall school supplies. They order the packages from the supplier and arrange a late summer school supply pick up day!

Shenendehowa Inventors

This program encourages students to come up with an invention that solves a problem of their choosing and provides a forum for displaying the inventions at Clifton Park Center in February and afterwards at Karigon. Volunteers are needed to help coordinate two evening meetings, make copies and distribute information.

Student Art Program

This committee uses a commercial company (i.e., Original Works, Silver Graphics) to turn your child's original artwork into magnets, note cards, T-shirts, etc. Volunteers are needed to collect artwork and associated fees, and to sort and distribute finished artwork.

Sunshine

Recognition gifts for the school staff are bought and presented on special occasions. Volunteers are needed to help purchase and distribute gifts.

Tan Box

This committee maintains the teacher's activity boxes for Tan Box drills.

Yearbook

This committee captures Karigon memories by producing a 60 page yearbook filled with photos of students, staff, activities, clubs and candids. Volunteers are needed to take photos (digital camera provided) and proof read.
