This afternoon, two cars were involved in a serious accident on Route 146. One of the cars spun around and hit a Shenendehowa bus carrying Shatekon students. No students were injured. The students all boarded a second bus and were driven back to Shatekon. Parents of the students on the bus are being called.

The Board of Education appointed Deborah
Price as interim principal of Shatekon Elementary School,

This came about due to the recent appointment of Elizabeth
Wood to the position of Assistant Superintendent for
Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.
The principal position for Shatekon has been posted with the
deadline for applications on 1/13. The goal is to have a new
principal in place on or about March 5.
The Shen Varsity Dance Team, coached by Linda Shady, recently spent a long weekend in Disney World, Orlando, Fl. being filmed for the Disney Christmas Day Parade. The girls qualified to participate by receiving national team recognition at their NDA (National Dance Alliance) dance summer camp. They travelled to Walt Disney World along with 500 other dancers and cheerleaders from across the country. After hours of practice as a large group, they performed the routine on Main Street, Disney in front of thousands of spectators and film crews. Watch for the girls in their red, gold, and white uniforms as the Disney Holiday Parade airs on ABC Christmas Day.

• Do you have questions about whether your child is ready for
kindergarten?
• Do you ask yourself, “Is there anything I can do to prepare my
child?”
• Are you wondering what your child might experience in a typical
day?
• Do you have questions about your child’s bus ride?
• Are you wondering what teachers will expect from you and your
child?
An experienced panel of Shenendehowa staff has been assembled to
help present information to help answer these questions.
The panel will include an elementary principal, kindergarten
teachers, director of transportation, a school nurse, and a school
counselor, among others. At the end of the presentation, you will
have an opportunity to ask specific questions regarding your
child.
We will provide coffee and dessert, so please come out and get
your questions about kindergarten answered.
**There will be a coloring table for those parents who need to
bring their children.
Five Shenendehowa students performed in this year's NYSSMA All-State Music Festival in Rochester on December 1-4, 2011. Top performing students from across the state are selected to perform in this festival. Competition is highly competitive and is considered amongst the elite honors in Music Education. Bonnie Culpepper, Casey Kobylar, and Daniel Lyng represented Shenendehowa in the Mixed Choir group and Lisa Liu performed in the String Orchestra. Rachel Sohn, a 7th grader at Acadia, was selected in a similarly competitive process, to perform a high level piano solo for an audience of educators and peers. Congratulations to all involved on a distinguished performance!

As we all scurry around to do the last minute preparations for holiday or New Year festivities, it is easy to see how people can “tune out” to the economic realities facing our schools. The fact of the matter is, as we gear up for the 2012-13 budget development process, we need you to be tuned in to what is transpiring and how it will impact educational provisions here at Shen. If you are interested in finding out how the district intends to build this budget, please view the video of the presentation that Dr. L. Oliver Robinson made to the board of education at http://shen.welearntube.org/?q=node/38.

Two years ago, the school district
terminated a bus driver who tested positive for marijuana.
Last week, the district received notice that the state
Appellate Division ruled that the driver must be reinstated
to the position.
The Shenendehowa Board of Education deliberated the decision
of the state Appellate Court and decided to appeal the
ruling. The person will not be reinstated while we are
appealing the decision.
We believe our actions to be appropriate as it relates to
the safety and welfare of our students and think this is a
decision that must be challenged.
