Skano teacher Jan Sowalsky credits nurse Gale Elfner with saving her life. Jan wasn’t feeling well and stopped in to see the nurse. Her vital signs were not normal for her. Knowing that women present heart problems differently than men, Gail made Jan's husband promise to take her to the doctor immediately or, if he couldn’t get an appointment, go to the emergency room. After seeing the doctor, Jan was sent by ambulance to the hospital where she received emergency bypass surgery that afternoon. The surgeon told her if she had gone home to rest instead of listening to the nurse's advice, she would have been died of a heart attack that day. "If Gail hadn’t been so insistent I would have gone home to rest instead of going to the doctor," said Jan. "She saved my life." The district honored Gail with a plaque for her tremendous commitment to the health and welfare of our students and staff.
