High School student designs new logo for the Shenendehowa
Community CoalitionThe Shenendehowa Community
Coalition, whose mission is to reduce and prevent risky behaviors
among youth, is proud to announce the release of a new logo
designed by senior, Shannon Smith, from Shen High School East. The
final design was picked from 25 logos submitted by students from
Sallie Way’s graphic design class. Each student was instructed to
design and develop a logo that demonstrates community ties, with
messaging that supports the Coalition’s overall mission and
captures the attention of a wide target audience-- teens, adults,
parents, community leaders, and administrators.
“I was very impressed by the concepts, design, and professionalism
demonstrated by Sallie Way’s graphic design class”, stated Alicia
Jacobs, Shen Coalition Marketing Chair. “They embraced this
project as if they were an advertising agency and the coalition
was a client. Each student presented their logo and explained how
and why the concept fit the goals of the coalition. The skills the
students demonstrated showcased the talents of today’s generation
of future business leaders.”
“The students really enjoyed this project being that they were
part of the target market and this will be a logo that they will
see in their school and community. A great byproduct of working
for the community is that the students become aware of the
services and organizations in their own home town and feel a
connection to them” commented Sallie Way, Shen High School Graphic
Arts teacher.
The three finalists included, Linnea Taylor, Melissa Scheibner and
Shannon Smith with the winner selected by a vote of the entire
Coalition. Shannon Smith’s logo was selected based on its
positive, energetic graphic and accompanying tag line “Shaping
better decisions.” Attached is a photo of her design.

Originally produced in 1937 with book, lyrics, and music by
Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, this version was adapted by
John Guare in 1998 for City Center Encores! In Seaport, Long
Island, haven for a theatrical colony, the children of
vaudevillians devise a way to keep the Sheriff from sending
them to the work farm while their parents tour.
The score features three of Rodgers and Harts most famous
songs: “My Funny Valentine,” “Where or When,” and “Johnny
One Note.” It also includes “I Wish I Were in Love Again,”
filled with Hart’s sardonic wit.
Tommy Swimm plays Valentine (Val) LaMar, and Devon
Poniatowski is Wilhemena (Billie) Smith. Drew D’Amelia plays
Marshall Blackstone, and Joe Davila is Peter. Carolyn
Krupski and Kevin Orlando play Dolores Reynolds and Gus
Fielding, and Sarah Koniszewski is Baby Rose.
The production team is headed by Dora Myers, director.

Prior to the last two storms, this year was light on snow and it effected the district's Nordic Ski Team and their ability to get in quality training. Ken Patenaude, Bill Johnson and members of the district grounds crew created a man-made, cross-country ski trail for the nordic ski team which included two hills and a turnaround area which is critical to the sport. Skiers were finally able to get the proper training for upcoming races.

The entire Shenendehowa community is deeply saddened by the loss of Tristen Brandow, a third-grade student at Arongen, after a long battle with cancer. Tristen previously attended Shatekon and spent time in Okte. He was an out-going, courageous and free-spirited boy who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The Crisis Teams, which are made up of administrators, psychologists, counselors and teachers, will be available to provide children with a time to talk and share their feelings. The team will monitor student reaction and help students who may need more time to adjust to this tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and all those who knew, loved and/or taught this very special young man.

James St. Denis, a science teacher at Shenendehowa High School has achieved National Board Certification in 2010. A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.

In an effort to dispel rumors and
provide you with factual information, this message is being
shared:
Today at the high school during dismissal, transportation
personnel noticed that a young man, not a Shen student, had
two hunting rifles on a gun rack in his car. The district’s
security called the Saratoga County Sheriff and NYS Police.
Although the police determined that the young man was in
legal possession of the guns and the appropriate gun locks
were engaged, the possession on school grounds was violation
of state laws. The young man was on campus to pick up his
girl friend. There was never an intent to harm students or
school personnel.
The district encourages student and staff “if they see
something, say something” and report any and all incidents
that are suspicious. We commend the efforts of the staff
members for their vigilance in following the district’s
safety protocols.
