The Adolescent Brain..."Why Children Make the Decisions that They
Do"
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
HSE Auditorium - 7 PM
Michael Nerney is a consultant in Substance Abuse Prevention and
Education with over thirty years
experience in the field Mr. Nerney's understanding of adolescent
issues stems from twelve years
experience as a teacher and coach at the junior and high school
levels. He is a certified instructor in
violence prevention and management with the Crisis Prevention
Institute (CPI), has served as a
consultant for learning centers and has been a consultant for two
major television networks and most
recently appeared on the ABC program "20/20".
Whether we worry out loud or keep quietly to ourselves, parents
have cause for concern regarding teen behavior,
especially substance abuse. National, state and local indicators
show that rates of substance use and abuse are rising
among teens.
The evening with parents and other concerned community members
will:
- learn about the scope of the problem nationally, statewide and
within our own community;
- explore the underlying reasons for the increase in substance
abuse among teens ;
- put new information into a framework that makes sense;
- discuss new drug trends and concurrent high risk behaviors; and
- explore possible prevention strategies.
Join us for this informative evening. Learn what every parent
should be aware of and "why children make the decisions that they
do. "

In an age of globalization, Shenendehowa
Central Schools is taking steps to move forward to provide our
students with global awareness and connections. Anna Sugarman, one
of our professional development coordinators, is an Associate
Member of the Advisory Committee on Exceptional Children and Youth
for the Office of Overseas Schools, US Department of State. As a
member of this committee, she has traveled on different occasions
to assist the international schools in their work with gifted
children. How does this help students at Shenendehowa? All
transportation and expenses have been and are sponsored by the US
State Department through grant funding.
In 2009, Dr. Robinson was asked by the Overseas Schools Office if
we would like to participate in a School to School Partnership.
After discussions with the State Department, Dr. Robinson agreed.
Shortly thereafter, he traveled to the American International
School of Kingston to meet with the Director, Sean Goudie and
formally visit the school. A reciprocal visit occurred when Sean
Goudie came to Shenendehowa a few months later.
During the last two years, our school has offered professional
development to AISK and started to establish a relationship
between our students and the students there. Anna with Mike
Gutchell and most recently, Elizabeth Wood, have traveled to the
school in Kingston. In January, fifth grade students in Laura
Ryan’s class at Shatekon have participated in two Skype sessions
focused on cultural similarities and differences. These
conversations allow students to exchange ideas, books that they
are reading and develop common understandings. These interactions
enable Shenendehowa students to build relationships abroad and
gain greater understanding of others in the world while never
leaving their classrooms. Relationships are also being established
with their art, music and world language teachers. This May, six
Jamaican high school students and their principal, Scott Genzer,
will join us for a few days to have an American high school
experience here at Shenendehowa. These partnerships are meant to
benefit both parties. A draft plan for the school to school
partnership has been developed which will include continued
relationship building and possible teacher exchanges.
As Anna travels, she is always on the “look out” for new
opportunities to enhance and extend our student and teacher
connections while picking up the newest and latest on
international instructional practices. Most recently, after
speaking at an international conference in San Francisco, she
returned with a number of new connections. These include
opportunities for technological exchanges with our fifth grade
elementary students with children in Mexico City, Mexico, Bogota,
Columbia and Quito, Ecuador, as they study Latin American culture,
government, economy, politics and geography. Spanish teachers in
Quito are going to be working with our own Spanish teachers here
to share resources and strategies. She is also investigating
having our students participate in global issues with students
from all around the world. With the advancement of technology, our
students and teachers can take advantage of these great
opportunities. It takes a world to raise a child these days and we
are hoping that possibilities will continue and expand as our
network grows.
