It is with great pride that we announce that Brian Sprague was selected by the Business Department as the 2011-2012 Outstanding Business Education Student from Shendendehowa. Brian was recognized this past Thursday night at the annual Business & Marketing Educators’ Association of the Capital District. We are thrilled to also let you know that Brian was the recipient of a $500 BMEA. There were 32 students awarded at this event and only two received scholarships. We are quite proud.

The Saratoga Envirothon is a hands-on environmental education competition where a team of five high school students work compete in five different environmental categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue as well as an oral presentation.
Shenedehowa competed against 13 different teams and placed 2nd in current issues, and 3rd in soils and 5th overall. Great job team, especially in the pouring rain all day. (5/8/12)

On Saturday, the Shenendehowa Latin Department hosted 7 schools in a Certamen, which is a Latin Jeopardy type game. Shenendehowa did quite well in the contest. Mrs. Sugarman, Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. Griswold, Mrs. Pagnotta, and retired LOTE teacher Mrs. Barber all worked on the contest, as well as many supportive parents. Shen HS student Katie Nolan's billboard was selected to appear on a billboard on Route 9. For 11 years the graphic design class at the high school has teamed up with Lamar Advertising and Linda Campion from the Kathleen A. Campion Foundation to promote awareness of the dangers involved with drinking and driving.

Shenendehowa High School students and staff have partnered with Turner Construction, the Town of Clifton Park and the Southern Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce on a project to revitalize Historic Lock 19 in Vischer Ferry.  On Wednesday, April 18th student teams toured the site with their mentor engineers from Turner Construction, GE and Momentive Performance Materials. Construction materials for the project are being donated by Curtis Lumber in Ballston Spa.

Congratulations to our Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club on their success at this year’s State Leadership Conference in Rochester. Caitlin Runyon, Nicole Forchielli, Peter Mooradian and Sam Holcomb all took home awards. They competed in topics such as Banking & Financial Systems, Entrepreneurship and Impromptu Speaking. Over 600 students from around the state of New York attended this year. We are very proud of our student’s accomplishments. Well done!

Shen HS students created a short video to be shown during homeroom on Earth Day to encourage people to recycle. Activities and displays on that day included a tree give away, trashion show and local organic meals using biodegradable plates and utensils. Eric Wu, a junior, has been recognized nationally as one of 390 semi-finalists for the 2012 United States Physics Team. Of this select group. 5 students will be chosen to represent the United States at the International Physics Olympiad Competition later this year in Estonia. Congratulations to Eric who works with his AP Physics teacher Mike Tymeson.

Maria Albrecht has been selected as the winner of a State Farm Companies Foundation Scholarship. Winners are selected on the basis of skills and accomplishments from a pool of candidates who fulfilled the sponsor’s criteria and scored high on the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT.

The high school Mock Trial team, led by advisor Lindsay Haviland, moved on to the Saratoga County semi-finals after their victory in the 1st round. Sophomores Courtney Altenburger and Harry Newman-Plotnick were recognized for their efforts. Courtney won “Best Witness” and Harry, won “Best Advocate.”

Michelle McCarthy, a high school senior, has earned the recognition of Premier Distinction, the National Forensic League’s highest degree of student membership. This reflects Michelle’s sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds, and service projects. Students earn points in six separate categories: speech, debate, congress, service, district, and national. A total of 106 high school students in the nation earned this recognition between February 15 and March 15, 2012, placing Michelle among the top ½ of one percent of National Forensic League student members. Michelle’s Speech and Debate Club advisors are Corinne Jackson and Rob Rider.

Art work from 16 media arts students was chosen to be displayed at The Capital Region Media Arts Fest. These students include: Jay Cobb, Michaela Halse, Riley Irving, Katy Koval, Kathy Li, Juliana McDermott, Jillian McGrath, Olivia Nadel, Jessica Noeth, Bryce Olson, Maria Paley, Alex Palmer, August Rice, Briana Swota, Alex Wollyung, and Morgan Bourdeau. They attended the Media Fest at Niskayuna High School with their art teachers Mrs. Plouff, Mrs. Way, and Ms. Suen. Maria Paley’s photograph won third place in the darkroom special processes category, while Jillian McGrath’s photo received honorable mention. Congratulations to all the students for their great work.

Shen Colorguard won a silver and three gold medals at the State Championships for Colorguard in Syracuse, NY. Two of Shen’s colorguard teams qualified for the World Championships.

HSW Breakfast Club and the Global History 9 classes hosted a food drive at HSWest. It was a competition between Global teachers. Total food items collected: 2312. Winner of highest class average donated: Burlingame and Keyser with 4 cans per student (872 total). Winner of best structure made out of the cans: Mahoney with a model of Zheng He’s treasure ship. Shen After-Prom

The Shen After Prom even will be held May 19th for the Junior After-Prom and June 2nd for Senior After-Prom. Both will run from 12 am to 3 am and be held at the Southern Saratoga YMCA.

Shenendehowa’s Delaney Rives and Ami bhavsar are the student honorees in The 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of secondary School Principals, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities.
Delaney Rives, a Shenendehowa senior is our local honoree. We celebrate the local volunteer work that earned her this designation.
Ami Bhavsar, a Shenendehowa senior is a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

The Arts in Three-Dimensions show features the work of eight Shenendehowa HS students. This year’s exhibition consists of 67 works from 11 districts. The annual show is an opportunity for Capital Region schools to highlight and showcase their three-dimensional art programs. Included in this exhibit are works made from clay, wire, jewelry, plaster, paper-mache, wood and found materials. The show is on exhibit from February 1 through February 29, 2012 at Mohonasen High School’s Art Gallery. Congratulations to our Shen Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club for a stellar performance at the District IV Spring Meeting at the Empire State Plaza on Friday, February 3rd. Our Shen FBLA students took 1st place in 7 out of 15 events, and also qualified as finalists for 5 out of 10 performance events. These students are now eligible to attend the State Leadership Conference in Rochester this coming April. Congratulations to all!

Shenendehowa’s student finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program are Rachel Harrison and Grigoriy  Tabak. To achieve the status of finalist requires achievement in the top one percent of United States high school graduating seniors who took the National Merit Scholarship examination. This award is one of the highest forms of recognition that a high school senior can achieve. A certificate will be presented to these students at the high school’s Awards Program on Thursday, May 24th. The program will be held in the Shenendehowa High School auditorium.

Congratulations to senior Jade Conrad who has been recognized by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for her selection as a Black History Month Creative Expression Contest winner. Jade and her fellow winners will receive awards on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School in Albany. Jade will also tape an excerpt from her essay for airing on local television and radio stations during the month of February. Congratulations to Jade and her family. We are proud of her!

Shen High School sent 13 students from the World of Difference Club to the STOP (STUDENTS TOGETHER OPPOSING PREJUDICE) Conference at Siena College.

Each year 200 students from 20 Capital Region Middle Schools and High Schools participate in an anti-bias conference.. This conference is sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr.and Coretta Scott King Lecture Series and is organized and run by the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute.

Students meet in small groups and are involved in activities, workshops, discussions and action planning around issues of prejudice, tolerance, and respect. Students attend this conference to actively work in groups with adult leaders to discuss ways they can become more involved and to help extinguish intolerance, bullying, and discrimination. Students are led by trained ADL facilitators, but there is ample input from the students themselves as they make plans to bring what they learned back to their schools.

Advisors - counselors or teachers - from the schools also take part in their own workshop where they are guided through the themes of the day with a focus on becoming equipped with the tools to bring the lessons learned back to their schools.

Shen High School held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony. This year, Korean War veteran Cornelius "Bud" Albert received his honorary high school diploma making him the first graduate of the class of 2012!. Mr. Albert left high school to join the army. His grandchildren attend Tesago Elementary. The ceremony also included the Presentation of Colors and the POW MIA Ceremony by the American Legion. The Mostly A Capella choir sang the national anthem.

Seniors and parents are invited to attend an informative financial aid workshop being held on Thursday, December 8th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in High School East Little Theatre. Beth Post-Lundquist, Director of Financial Aid at Skidmore College will be the presenter. This workshop is very helpful to parents of seniors.

Shen High School has 16 Commended Students in the 2011 Merit Program

Shenendehowa High School recognized 16 students for being named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These seniors were presented with a Certificate of Commendation by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Commended students include: Maria Albrecht, Givan Amaratunga, Grace Barkhuff, Kristin Bartlett, Lauren Fish, Trevor Hennigan, Siyao Liu,  Michelle McCarthy, Karann Putrevu, Nicholas Ringelberg, Elizabeth Rogers, Catherine Shattuck, Gina Stalica, Carolyn Stewart, Jiun-Kai Wang,and Jonathan Zeosky.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being honored for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 of over 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 National Merit Program by taking the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT Qualifying Test.

High School Robotics Team 20-The Rocketeers competed in the off-season tournament River Rage in Manchester New Hampshire on Saturday October 29. The team finished in second place with alliance partners from Augusta Maine and Bridgewater Massachusetts. We had a great day and made it home safely through the snow in the Berkshires!

Lisa Liu, a senior at Shenendehowa High School East, was chosen as the 2011 Lois Lyman Concerto Competition Winner to play violin as a soloist with the Empire State Youth Orchestra. She will be performing November 12 at 7:30 at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Lisa performs in the school orchestra under the direction of Mr. Joseph Gumpper. She was the assistant concertmaster of the 2011 NYSSMA All State Symphony Orchestra, was selected for the 2011 All Eastern Honors Orchestra, and was the recipient of the 2010 Saratoga-Warren County Music Educators’ Association Scholarship Award. She played in the pit orchestra of Hubbard Hall’s 2010 production of Hansel and Gretel. This past summer, Lisa attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s String Quartet Workshop and was concertmaster of the Young Artists Orchestra.

Shenendehowa High School Senate held its annual Spirit Rally to honor the fall sports teams. All 3,000 high school students attended the event held in Steuerwald Stadium. Teams were announced and Cheer wars, a tug of war and a relay race was held.

Shen High School physics students calculate acceleration due to gravity by dropping water balloons, golf balls, and pumpkins from the top of the bleachers. Neglecting air resistance, all objects accelerate at the same rate (9.81 meters/second2). An object’s mass has absolutely no impact on how fast it falls. So, a pumpkin and an apple dropped at the same time from the same height will hit the ground at the same time.
Students measured the distance the objects fell, recorded the times for the falls, used their physics equations to calculate the acceleration due to gravity for each object, and then compared their calculated value to the accepted value.

Please see the information below regarding the homecoming football game to be played Friday night at 7pm against Albany High School/p>

• All 2,000 student section t-shirts have been sold out. On behalf of the Shen Athletic Department we would like to say thanks to everyone helping to support a great cause in the fight against cancer.

• All students who plan on attending the game need to be in school Friday

• Ticket gates will open at 6 pm Friday night and we would encourage everyone to get there early as parking will be at a premium. Cost is $3 for adults and $1 for students unless they have purchased a shirt and admission to the game is included in the price of the shirt

• All Shen students will use the student entrance back by the new gym girls locker room to enter the stadium

• Students need to be wearing their t-shirts as only students with t-shirts will be allowed in the designated student sections

• The end zone seating is reserved for the Class of 2012

• Be prepared in case of inclement weather

• And we would like to encourage all students, parents, staff and community members who are attending the game to wear green and white tomorrow in support of Shenendehowa School Pride

The FBLA club recently collected school supplies for residents in the Schoharie County region that were impacted by Hurricane Irene and the flooding that ensued. Students, faculty and staff were overwhelmingly generous with their donations and we were able to collect roughly ten boxes of supplies to send. Thank you to everyone who took the effort to donate to this important cause.

Shen High School junior, Sanjay Anchar, has been awarded the National Maritime Historical Society First Place Special Prize for his New York State History Day website entry entitled “LBJ & the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Sanjay was awarded a scholarship grant of $150.00 for his project. This project was completed as part of the American Studies Honors program taught by Amber Quinn and Tammy Crump.
The National Maritime Historical Society is a not-for–profit membership organization dedicated to preserving and promoting knowledge of our maritime heritage.

At 744, the class of 2011 was the largest class to graduate from Shen (see list of graduating classes). 247 received Advanced Regents Diplomas, 171 Advanced Regents with Honors Diplomas and 58 students had a GPA at or above 95%.
