District Attorney Mr. Frank Hurley, from New York City, presented to Skano’s fifth graders. His focus was on the Bill of Rights and how these amendments connected to some very interesting cases. What a dynamic and interesting speaker!

Skano kindergarteners had a visit with a dental hygienist from Capital District Pediatric Dentistry. She talked to the children about how to keep their teeth healthy by brushing, flossing, and eating healthy foods and drinks!

As a culminating activity to their graphing unit, Mrs. Leclerc’s class sorted and graphed candy hearts.
As part of the Sound unit in 3rd grade, Mrs. Redgrave’s class made ‘edible ears’ using food and candy. Each part of the ear was a different food or candy and was ‘glued’ in place using fluff. Students then attached labels to each of the parts. Thank you to Kohl’s for donating the boxes for this awesome project.

At Morning Program, Mrs. Dunham’s 2nd grade class taught us the differences and similarities of fresh water and salt water by making a human Venn diagram. Their catchy tune they sang before and after the facts were given was terrific and memorable.

4th and 5th grade choir students bring Holiday Cheer to Skano Elementary!
First grade Skano students enjoyed a visit from the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Children’s Museum. The program, “In Days Long Ago,” taught children about clothes, chores, and games from the pioneer days.

Skano’s Community Action Club held a Food and Personal Care Items Drive. Collected items were donated to CAPTAIN to benefit local families in our community.
Kindergarten students at Skano learn how to grind corn from the Scotia-Glenville traveling museum. Authentic handmade objects reveal how the earliest people of the Mohawk Valley learned the secrets of nature in order to survive.
After reading a novel of their choice, students in Mr. Farquharson and Mrs. Michelucci’s fourth grade class designed and shared their Book Report in a Bag project.
On November 15th and 16th, Shen Elementary librarians partnered with the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library to celebrate the launch of the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, Cabin Fever.

Skano's October 28th event was Spooktacular! 352 parents and students attended the event and a great time was had by all.

Future doctors from Skano Elementary studied the functions of the skeletal system, memorized the bones, parts of the bone and different kinds of fractures. They passed their exams with flying colors and earned their scrubs!

Skano Elementary hosted an activity to end the District-wide Bullying Prevention week and Kick-off Skano’s No Put Downs Program . The Beth and Scott and Friends show provided Skano’s students with two shows: The K-2 program involved an interactive concert that focused on “the Golden Rule” and the importance of treating themselves and others with care and respect. The 3-5 program involved an interactive concert focusing on “Doing the Right Thing” and how to make choices that are right for them and to understand how the choices they make have a strong impact – positive and negative – on others.

The Run for Skano was held on October 16th we had a great turn out. 110 Skano students participate in the Run and there were 35 buddy runner. $5,800.00 was raised this year and all the kids received a Run for Skano t-shirt.

Jill Gould was appointed as Interim Principal of Skano Elementary School to serve in Mary Fitzgerald’s leave of absence. While the appointment is effective 9/1/11, she will begin working now with the Skano staff to ensure a smooth transition and opening of school. She will receive a leave of absence from her current position as the Director of Instructional Programs and Planning (K-12). She was hired at Shen in 2006 as academic administrator for math/science (k-5). Prior to that, she taught for 9 years at the elementary level at Cobleskill/Richmondville CSD and grade 6 in Chatham Middle School.
