New evaluations for teachers and administrators

Shen has developed a a question and answer document explaining New York’s Education Law ยง3012-c that requires an annual performance evaluation of all teachers and principals

Shenendehowa has developed its Basic Plan for Teacher evaluation and Basic Plan for Principal evaluation based regulations released by the NYS Education Department. Last year, the legislature passed a bill that mandates 60 percent of a teacher’s evaluation be based on subjective measures like a principal’s observations, a review of student work, or surveys of parents and students; 20 percent on local tests or other assessments; and 20 percent on state tests, potentially rising to 25 percent in subsequent years.

The evaluations will be conducted annually, and will be used for a number of things, from developing more effective professional development programs for teachers to decisions about promotion, retention and removal.

The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) has challenged the new evaluation system and a judge ruled that 40 percent of a a teacher's evaluation cannot be based on student test scores. The NYS Education Department says it will appeal. Click here for story. However, while the debate goes on at the state level, the district still has an obligation to evaluate teachers and principals.
