Shen Middle
School students are sewing ten community service
quilts to provide comfort to children in crisis. This
interdisciplinary project was designed to combine skills
taught in family and consumer sciences (FACS) and art. In
art class students designed individual squares for the quilt
and they began sewing sections of the quilt together during
FACS class in March. The quilts will be donated to the
pediatric unit at "Northwoods at Hilltop," a rehabilitation
center for children who have suffered head trauma and to
Hospice Wave Riders, a support group for children who have
had someone close to them die.
Middle school FACS teacher Jennifer Nicholls, art teacher
Mary Jenny and Clifton Park resident Ann Schwanda have been
collaborating on the project at Shen and it was recently
presented at the state level to the NYS Family and Consumer
Science Educators as well as at the NYS Middle School
Conference.

Shenendehowa recognized by the Office of State Comptroller
for excellence in financial practices. After closing out a
five-year plan to audit 733 school districts and BOCES
across the state, Shenendehowa was recognized as one of 39
with an excellent audit. According to a statement
published in On Board, a publication of the New York State
School Boards Association, "the comptroller found the
overwhelming majority of school districts are honest,
ethical and care only about providing the best education
possible."
Shenendehowa's superintendent, Dr. L. Oliver Robinson fully
agrees with the comptroller's assessment and sees Shen's
recognition for shrewd fiscal management and high academic
performance as a result of the unwavering commitment to
excellence. "We take our responsibilities seriously and
endeavor to continue being good stewards of district
resources," said Robinson. |

Shenendehowa Central Schools will receive a $77,137
service-learning grant for an environmental responsibility
project from the State Farm Youth
Advisory Board. A core group of seven Shenendehowa High
School students wrote the grant with research assistance and
publication assistance from more than 100 students in the
environmental science classes. The grant will be used to
purchase the equipment needed to compost the districts
cafeteria waste and use it to grow a community garden.
Through the curriculum and environmental clubs, this
initiative will provide opportunities to educate students,
staff, and the larger community about the benefits of
composting, recycling, and waste management.
"This grant from State Farm provided our students with a
great, real-life learning experience," said Superintendent
Dr. L. Oliver Robinson. "They learned first-hand how to
develop an idea, research what is needed to implement it
(budget, materials, etc.), wrote a grant to get the funding
and now will be responsible for making it come to fruition.
We are looking more and more to provide this type of
experiential learning for our students and State Farm has
been a great partner."
Shenendehowa is one of 82 community organizations to receive
a service-learning, youth-led grant across the United States
and Canada. More than 1,100 grant requests were received by
the Board.
State Farm supports service-learning because it combines
service to the community with classroom curriculum in a
hands-on approach to mastering subject material while
fostering civic responsibility, said Vice President of
Agency, Vance Yoshikawa. I applaud the leadership of the
Shenendehowa district who shares State Farms commitment to
education, our community and our youth and I look forward to
our partnership.
The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a diverse group of 30
youth, ages 17-20, who were chosen through a competitive
process to lead and oversee this $5 million/year signature
service-learning initiative. The Youth Board identified the
issues, issued competitive grants and will now provide
technical assistance, communication and oversight to site
grantees. Visit www.statefarmyab.com for more information
about the different projects being funded and about the
Youth Advisory Board. |
